Hardy Woven Hand Forged Steel Raised Bed

This Hardy Woven Hand Forged Steel Raised Bed will make a real statement in your garden or courtyard. They have the charm of traditional hazel hurdles with the advantage of not rotting after a couple of winters in the mud. They are therefore, both decorative and practical.

We offer them either at 30cm (1 foot) or 45cm (18 inch) high, and either 80cm or 120cm wide, square or rectangular.  Since they are bespoke hand forged items there is always a slight variability in the dimensions (mostly on the length). These bespoke items can be produced in widths set in 40 cm increments. If you email your requirements to [email protected], we’ll be happy to provide a price for you.

Constructed from 30mm solid steel slats that are 3mm thick, they have decorative hand forged scrolls at both ends of each slat.  The slats are welded to 10mm uprights and each side securely links to the next using the metal hoops provided to create a rigid square raised bed. Over time the steel will take on a decorative rust layer.

Price includes shipping to UK mainland only. Please be aware that these structures are heavy and will need careful attention when moving and erecting the structure(s) on your property.  Delivery is to kerb side only.

Each raised bed is made from 4 panels.

30 cm high, 80 cm x 80 cm wide raised bed, each panel weighs about 8.7kg

Dimensions may vary slightly (a centimeter or so) since this is a hand-forged product.

 

Assembly

This is really easy and should only take 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 1. Decide where the raised bed will be sited.  The ground should be relatively flat.

Step 2.  Important step.  Choose your first panel and make sure that for the top most slat hand forged scroll coils around so that the end of the scroll is on what will be the inside of the raised bed. For each panel you install make sure you follow the same rule.

Step 3.  Insert the next panel at 90 degrees to the first – the two end rods should be immediately adjacent to each other.  Follow on round until all 4 panels are installed

Step 4.  Insert the 4 retaining steel hoops vertically down between the slats of each end rod.  The end of the hoop should go a short distance into the ground and the top of the hoop will tuck in behind the top forged scrolls so this is on the internal side of the raised bed and it will sit slightly below the top of the raised bed.

Gertrude Jekyll

Gertrude Jekyll

Initially an artist and craftswoman, Gertrude Jekyll took up gardening when her eyesight became too weak to continue painting. She worked with William Robinson, together they promoted naturalistic planting, introduced the herbaceous border and cottage-garden planting. Later she worked with the architect Edward Lutyens to produce houses where the garden was an integral part of the house’s design and her planting schemes were painterly, beautiful and harmonious.

Miss Ellen Willmott

Miss Ellen Willmott was the first woman to be awarded the RHS Medal; she also helped to bring Wisley gardens, the RHS’s first garden, into being. She inherited a fortune and she spent it on plants and gardens. Miss Willmott funded plant collecting expeditions, bred numerous daffodils and other species and wrote the definitive book of her day on Roses in two volumes. She was an early photographer - of gardens. More than two hundred plants and varieties are named after her or after her garden at Warley Place, Essex.

The most famous garden created by Vita Sackville-West was her second, at Sissinghurst, now run by the National Trust. She followed many of the principles of Gertrude Jekyll - coloured by the influence of her travels with her diplomat husband. His skill in designing the hard landscapes was key. The garden is divided into intimate ‘rooms’ the most famous of which, the White Garden, is full of the perfume of Nicotiana and jasmine at dusk.
