We started thinking about creating better plant labels for gardens. We wanted tough labels for newly bought plants in a newly dug flower bed. A few years ago we bought some ‘metal’ labels on the internet for our apple trees, the labels turned out to be painted plastic which rotted in the sunlight after a couple of years. Not Good. We’ve considered kits which allow you to metal punch the names one letter at a time…but surely, we thought, there has to be a better technological solution? And now here it is. Here is an easy way for you to order bespoke labels that last, they also look smart and are easy to read.
Bespoke garden labels that last
Anodised aluminium is the material we chose to make strong durable labels. We laser engrave the plant name through the anodised layer. This gives you, the gardener, a permanent written record that you can push into the ground right next to the plant. The writing shows up clearly as off white against black. This will be very useful for keeping track of plants that die back in the winter and hopefully for making sure another person in the garden who is less familiar with the plants digs up the right things!
Some of you will want to have botanical labels with the full Latin name and family group; there is a section in the shop for these. All you have to do is type in the name of your plant and use the drop down box to find the family name if you want it. Some of us find that this helps with the spelling.
Labels have many uses
We started by making bespoke labels, then we realised that they could have other uses in the garden…we realised they could mark where bulbs have been planted or mark the grave of a favourite guinea pig. People might want a label that says who the plant came from: “Aunty Maria’s Iris” perhaps. It could be personal or silly, that’s fine, the labels can say whatever a buyer wants*.
We thought about labels that could be useful for people opening their garden for charity or with large numbers of visitors. This has led to a section of pre-designed labels which can be ordered individually. The wording on these labels is fixed, making them less expensive.
